Banaue Rice Terraces is in the northern part of Luzon,
nestled deep in the heartland of the Cordillera. Considered
to be the 8th wonder of the world, the Banaue Rice Terraces
was constructed with bare hands and some crude implements
some 2000 years ago by the Ifugao tribal people.
The terraces rise to an altitude of about 5,000 feet above
sea level and encompassing 4,000 square miles. It transformed
the barren stone mountains of the Cordillera into arable
ledges where rice can grow. The length of the terraces,
if connected end-to-end, would encircle half the globe or
would be 10 times the length of the Great Walls of China.
Banaue is 8 to 9 hours car ride from Manila.
Banga-an Village
Banga-an is one of the villages in Banaue where you can
find the old traditions of the Ifugaonas. For those who
cannot make the two-hour hike to Batad, this is the alternative
tour. Proceed to the village of Banga-an, two kilometers
farther at the junction leading to Batad. Here you can just
stand by the roadside and idle your hours away gazing at
the fascinating environs. On summer afternoons (March-May),
just before sunset you can see rainbows against the setting
sun at the horizon.
Amphitheater Rice Terraces of Batad
The trip to Batad takes practically the whole day and is
recommended only to strong hikers. From Banaue, Batad is
approximately 16 kilometers. About 12 kilometers of the
way can be traveled by transportation with rest of distance
to be traversed by foot on mountain trails (only 2 hours
hike). Batad boasts the beautifully contoured rice terraces
where tattoed men and women cultivate their daily staple.
Sagada Caves (Burial & Sanguiming Caves)
Sagada is famous for its caves. It was used by the natives
as a burial for their dead during the ancient times. Up
to now the coffins which was put into the caves 400 years
ago are still intact and can be viewed. The Sanguiming cave,
one of the famous caves for its rock formation inside. The
tour will last for 2-3 hours. We advise our guest to bring
extra clothes.
