Corregidor, a small, tadpole-shaped island comprising only about 15 square kilometers of land lies at the entrance of Manila Bay. It is strategically located for controlling sea traffic entering Manila Bay.

The island was first fortified by the Spanish in 1795. The fortification did not deter Admiral Dewey’s entry into the bay in 1898. The Americans fortified the island, and it was to “The Rock” as Corregidor is called, that the Philippine government and allied forces retreated before advancing Japanese troops, leaving Manila in the hope that it would be spared much damage.
