Day 1: Arrive, settle into Old Faithful, see the geyser basin

Stay: Old Faithful Inn or Old Faithful Snow Lodge
Plan: Arrive through the West, South, or East Entrance depending on your flight/drive. Check in near Old Faithful, then spend the afternoon exploring Old Faithful Geyser, Geyser Hill, and the Upper Geyser Basin boardwalks.

This is the classic Yellowstone opening day: easy walking, lots of geothermal features, and no need to drive far after arrival. The Old Faithful area includes Old Faithful Geyser, Morning Glory Pool, Castle Geyser, Grand Geyser, Riverside Geyser, Black Sand Basin, Biscuit Basin, and the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center.

Evening: Watch Old Faithful erupt again around sunset, then have dinner at Old Faithful Inn or Snow Lodge.

Day 2: Grand Prismatic, Midway Geyser Basin, Firehole area

Stay: Old Faithful Inn or Old Faithful Snow Lodge
Morning: Start early at Grand Prismatic Spring and Midway Geyser Basin. Then hike the short trail to the Grand Prismatic Overlook from the Fairy Falls trailhead if conditions allow.

Midday: Visit Fountain Paint Pot, Firehole Lake Drive, and Firehole Canyon Drive. The Madison/West Yellowstone area is known for Grand Prismatic Spring, Fountain Paint Pot, Great Fountain Geyser, Firehole Canyon, Firehole Falls, and Fairy Falls.

Afternoon: Return south toward Old Faithful and stop at Biscuit Basin and Black Sand Basin if you did not cover them on Day 1.

Tip: Grand Prismatic is often steamy early in the morning. For better color visibility, late morning or midday is usually better, though parking is harder.

Day 3: West Thumb, Yellowstone Lake, Lake Hotel

Stay: Lake Yellowstone Hotel or Lake Lodge Cabins
Morning: Leave Old Faithful and drive toward West Thumb Geyser Basin, one of the most beautiful geothermal areas because it sits right on Yellowstone Lake. The West Thumb/Grant area includes Abyss Pool, Fishing Cone, West Thumb Geyser Basin, Lewis Lake, and Grant Village services.

Midday: Continue along Yellowstone Lake. Stop at lake viewpoints, Lake Butte Overlook if convenient, and check into Lake Yellowstone Hotel or Lake Lodge.

Afternoon: Do a relaxed lake activity: walk around the hotel/lakefront, visit Fishing Bridge, or take the Storm Point Trail if you want an easy hike.

Evening: Dinner at Lake Hotel. This is a good lower-intensity day after two geyser-heavy days.
